William Charles Whybrew was born 12 February 1872 at 34 Sutherland Street, Pimlico, London. He was the fifth child of William and Harriet Whybrew. Birth Reference St George Hanover Square, 1872 March quarter volume 1a page 372. He shows up as a nine year old in the 1881 census with his father William, his mother Ellen and sisters Jane and Annie. His aunt, Jane McCormack, is living with the family at 10 Horseferry Road, Pimlico. He is known by then as 'Charles', his middle name, and is described as a scholar. His father is a Police Constable. William is missing on the 1891 census but family tradition has it that he spent time as a soldier in India. However this has never been verified. In the 1901 census we have found William in the name of William C Wybrow transcribed as Wybron. He is described as an 'Engineers labourer' is single and 28 years old. He is a boarder in the household of James and Harriet Boyton (nee Ash) and their son James. They live at 86 Farmers Road, Brixton, Lambeth, London, Surrey. In 1902 William and Harriet have a child, Harriet, and are living at 179, Lavender Hill, Wandsworth, London, SW11. In 1903 William and Harriet were living in Southwark when their next child Ellen (Dolly) was born. On 29 November 1904 when their daughter Bertha (Birdie) was born the family lived at 7 Burnham Street, Southwark, London, Surrey. William lived in Southwark, London, Surrey in 1906 when his daughter (Evelyn) Mary was born. By 3 April 1909 when their son William Charles (Charlie) was born they had moved yet again and were living at 50 Louise House, Blendon Row, Southwark, London, Surrey. On his son's birth certificate William's occupation is described as 'Porter (poor law)'. Again family tradition has it that William was a 'Whipper Out' a traditional workhouse job where the post holder was required to get inmates out to work daily. In 1915 at the age of 38 years William married Harriet Boyton (Ash) reference Southwark 1915 September quarter volume 1d page 398. In 1917 when James Arthur AH Whybrew was killed in action in France in the first world war William and Harriet lived at 10 Tiverton Flats, Tiverton Road, Newington Causeway, Wandsworth, London. James apparently was Harriet's son by her first husband and in fact he was baptised and registered in the name of "Boyton" but later was either adopted or became known as Whybrew. The army death notification names James as the son of William Whybrew. There is some verbal tradition which says that James was in fact a true son of William and Harriet when William had been a lodger to Harriet and her then husband James Boyton. When his eldest daughter, Harriet married in 1940 William's occupation was described as "Caterer". (Deceased) William died in 1935 after being a widower for just 21 months. His death certificate reference is Lambeth 1935 June quarter 1935 volume1d page 238.
