Researching the Philo families in the UK and abroad

St. Nicholas,
East Dereham

East Dereham church has the earliest records of the Norfolk branch of the Philo family

Welcome!

The earliest record of a PHILO directly related to any living PHILO in the UK was the marriage of John PHILO to Frances SYMMONDS in East Dereham, Norfolk in 1695. The family prospered in Norfolk but by the 1870’s were mainly living outside Norfolk in the London area.

A separate PHILO family was established in Dovercourt in Essex, the earliest record here was the marriage of John PHYLOE to Rebecca CHASER in 1793. At the present time there is no known link between the Essex family and the Norfolk family.

The third PHILO family appeared in London in 1838 with the baptism of John Robert PHILO the son of Jane PHILO. I have no proof but I believe that this family is a branch of the Norfolk PHILO’s. .
